E3 2018: Ghost Of Tsushima Is The Most Ambitious Sucker Punch Game Yet

Ever since the release of Batman: Arkham VR in 2016, there has been radio silence regarding the next title from the acclaimed British developer, which will be a step in a new direction away from the dark knight. Apparently, three years is not enough for us to get our first glimpse at their newest project, as Rocksteady Studios co-founder Sefton Hill took to Twitter the week before E3 to confirm that they will not be making their way to LA this year.  
Fans of the Rainbow Six franchise may have been excited when Quarantine , a new 3-player co-op horror experience, was announced at E3 2019. Many even considered it one of the best horror games of E3 2019 , despite very little currently being known about the title. Its release date hadn't even been officially announced yet, but it was slated to release earlier in the year. Now, it also falls in the broad spectrum of any time between April 1, 2020 through March 31, 2  
Sucker Punch’s open-world game set in feudal Japan blew us away at E3 2018. With stark visuals and an approach that favored realism, Ghost of Tsushima is trying to create a Samurai adventure that is as authentic as possible. Sucker Punch is clearly working hard to ensure Ghost of Tsushima delivers a compelling game and narrative without going over-the-top. There is still a lot of Ghost of Tsushima that is left unsaid, but for an initial tease, what Sucker Punch brought to E3 was enough to leave us intrigued. It says a lot that something as seemingly simple as leaves moving on the ground had everyone talkMaking the violence more visceral isn't meant to be needless - the goal is to make you care about the violence and using a more realistic style so it has more gravity. The large world is such that anything you can see, you can go to - and it will be put into a smaller chunks to help it be less overwhelming. The prefecture structure allows each area to have a different tone and each area will have its own art and narrative themes throughout. The team started work on it after developing First Light and they had to learn new things like think about how the terrain would be used. The samurai theme has been used in gaming before - but hasn't been used in a AAA title. The Tenchu games would be the closest-equivalent in terms of scope, and those were fairly big releases at times but also tapered off towards the end of the series. Sucker Punch's pedigree in crafting high-level narratives and action-adventure gameplay means that players will be coming into the adventure with high expectations.From a gameplay perspective, Ghost of Tsushima is a departure from the Infamous franchise. While those games were all about continuously moving around the battlefield, Ghost of Tsushima is more about studying enemy movement, parrying and attacking when finding an opening. Melee combat becomes more nuanced when fighting 1v1, as shown in the final fight with his fallen comrade, Masako. Sucker Punch commented that they’re pulling heavily from Japanese cinema like Yojimbo for the combat. Unfortunately, the HUD was turned making it difficult to determine how exactly the game plays. When confronted, Sucker Punch didn’t explicitly compare combat to any other game on the market but did admit it has elements similar to the Batman Arkham and Middle-earth games.  
A magical battle royale game called Spellbreak was also shown off during State of Play. It seems to be very exhilarating, though it remains to be seen if Proletariat's battle royale will be able to break into the crowded genre. We will be able to play Spellbreak's Closed Beta in Spring 2  
Following leaks earlier this month, Capcom has officially unveiled a remake of Resident Evil 3. It also comes with Project Resistance, now officially called Resident Evil Resistance . Resident Evil 3 will release for PS4 on April 3, 2  
Sony's final State of Play for 2019 featured several new and interesting trailers, some of which are brand new announcements. Beyond samurai films, games like the Legend of Zelda and Sucker Punch's own Infamous inspired what we're seeing now with Ghost of Tsushima. It's an ambitious game and they were deliberate in their desire to wait to show off until it was ready. Camera angles will be used in ways to make the stances seem more impactful. Nobu the horse was shown off a bit as well, and more will be revealed with him later. The team enjoyed going with a darker tone than what they're used to with the Infamous franchise, and making the scope larger required them to learn new skills - like motion capturing a horse!  
After a year and a half of silence , Square Enix and PlatinumGames finally showed off Bablyon's Fall once more. It seems to be pretty on-brand when it comes to PlatinumGames action, though it does have a cool fantasy setting. Its visuals have also been created with a "Brushwork Filter ." We will apparently get more information on the game in Summer 2
